The Reverend Davitra Y. Smith is the founder and CEO of Speak Light, LLC, an inspiring and intellectually driven speaking platform dedicated to uplifting, informing, and empowering the next generation. Through Speak Light, Reverend Smith shares messages of hope, history, and the boundless potential within every individual. Her powerful, charismatic preaching style—known as “Vitra the Preacha”—is designed to ignite faith and inspire change, as she continually seeks to be a servant vessel used by God to transform lives across the globe.
Beyond the pulpit, Reverend Smith is a tireless advocate for social justice, with a special focus on supporting individuals with special needs, whether physical, mental, or emotional. She has a heartfelt commitment to advancing diabetes research, particularly Type One diabetes, and is a vocal advocate in efforts to secure more funding for research. Her hope is to one day see a cure for this chronic condition that impacts millions.
Reverend Smith’s journey as a minister includes significant milestones, such as being recognized as a rising preacher at the Dr. Ella P. Mitchell Daughters of Thunder Conference. Another highlight was her role as a Teaching Assistant for Systematic Theology through the Black Seminarian Fellowship, an experience she found profoundly rewarding as she helped shape the theological education of others. She earned her Master of Divinity from Palmer Theological Seminary in Saint David’s, PA, and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Religion as well as a certification in Business Administration from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.
Reverend Smith has consistently demonstrated a passion for fostering educational excellence, both inside and outside the classroom. With a deep commitment to empowering students, she began her journey in higher education, holding positions at prominent institutions such as Temple University in the Division of Student Affairs, Eastern University, and Palmer Theological Seminary. Through her strategic vision and leadership, she earned numerous accolades for her ability to create transformative environments that support students' personal and academic growth. Her commitment to education extends beyond traditional academic institutions. She has made a lasting impact in the charter school sector, as well as in various school districts across the Greater Philadelphia Area. In her role as an Administrator for Culture and Climate, Reverend Smith has advocated for initiatives that promote positive behavioral interventions and support systems for today’s youth. By championing programs that address the unique challenges facing students, she’s been instrumental in helping young people develop not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well. Through her efforts, Reverend Smith continues to be a driving force in shaping the future of education, consistently prioritizing student well-being and creating environments where all students can thrive.
In her civic engagement, Reverend Smith has served her community in various impactful roles. She is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, where she served as chapter chaplain, and was co-chair of the Childhood Hunger Committee, working to combat hunger in Philadelphia. She also served as chaplain for the Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Montgomery County chapter.
A mother of two, Reverend Smith is blessed with her daughter, Jeniece Yvette Marie, and son, Bakari Ade (pronounced: Ah-day) Xavier Smith. Born and raised in Philadelphia, she accepted Christ at the age of six and preached her first sermon in 2002 under the leadership of Rev. Dr. James S. Hall, Jr. Growing up in the church, she has always been deeply connected to her faith, which continues to fuel her ministry.
In her personal time, Reverend Smith enjoys painting, reading, exploring nature, and cherishing quality moments with family and friends. Above all, she is passionate about preaching and sharing the Good News of Christ with the world.
Trustee Denise Turner has been a dedicated member of Second Baptist Church since 1968, where she was baptized by Reverend George Kenner. Her journey at Second Baptist continued to flourish as she married Gordon Turner in 1975, also officiated by Reverend Kenner. Together, they have raised three children and are proud grandparents to two grandchildren.
Professionally, Denise had a long and impactful career in the legal field, serving as a notary for 20 years. Her administrative skills were also evident in her role as an administrator for Judge Paula Patrick from 2003 until her retirement in 2020, a position she held with distinction for over 17 years.
In addition to her professional achievements, Denise has been a faithful servant of the Second Baptist Church community. She contributed her time and talents in various ministries, including the Usher Board, Trustee, and Culinary Team. In 2011, she took on the role of Finance Clerk at the church, furthering her commitment to the church’s mission.
Denise Turner’s life reflects a deep devotion to both her family and her community, serving with grace and dedication in every capacity.
